Creeper-Only Gunpowder Farm
Stub article. Brief overview only. Full guide with schematics is planned.
Creeper farms filter out all non-creeper hostile mob spawns by exploiting mob height restrictions. Since Creepers are 1.7 blocks tall while Zombies and Skeletons are 1.95+ blocks, using trapdoors on the ceiling of a 1.8-block-tall spawning chamber allows only Creepers (and Spiders, which are separately filtered) to spawn.
Key Design Elements
- Spawning platform: Standard dark room with trapdoor ceilings at 1.8 block height. Mobs taller than 1.7 blocks cannot spawn in the reduced headroom.
- Spider proofing: Place buttons, pressure plates, or bottom slabs on the floor in a checkerboard pattern. Spiders require a 2x2 floor area of full blocks to spawn; breaking that pattern eliminates them entirely.
- Mob flushing: Timed water dispensers sweep spawned Creepers off the platform and into a central drop shaft every 20-30 seconds.
- Kill chamber: A 24+ block drop shaft ensures Creepers die on impact. Hoppers under the landing pad collect gunpowder into chests.
- Cat placement: For more advanced designs, cats placed at strategic points scare Creepers away from edges they'd otherwise avoid, improving path flow toward the drop point.
Rates
A well-built single-platform creeper farm in Java Edition produces around 1,500-2,000 gunpowder per hour. Multi-layer designs with 4-8 spawning platforms can push this considerably higher, though lighting and mob cap constraints apply.
